● Coast Guard Ship ‘Rajtarang’ commissioned
Minister of State for Defence M.M pallam Raju on May 19, 2012 commissioned Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Rajtarang ‘in Chennai. Raju said the economic growth witnessed by the country in the last two decades had reinforced the importance of maritime trade and commerce. The resultant growth in maritime traffic and commerce. The ICGS Rajtarang is a 50 meter inshore patrol vessel equipped with advanced navigational and communication sensors. With an economical speed of 16nots, the ship has an endurance of 1,500 nautical miles.

● IAF signs Rs 2,800-cr deal for Pilatus planes
The Indian Air Force’s long pending requirement of basic trainer aircraft can now be met with the acquisition of 75 Pilatus planes starting later this year under a Rs 2,800-crore deal signed on Thursday with the Swiss company. The air craft will help the IAF to replace its fleet of HPT -32 basic trainer aircraft which have been grounded for over two years now after a fatal air crash in 2009.

●Exercise ‘Shoor Veer’ concludes
Chief of the Army Staff General V.K Singh on May 2, 2012 reviewed the conduct of “Shoor Veer”, the war games and military training exercise under way in the border district of Hanumangarh in Rajasthan. Exercise “Shoor Veer” termed the biggest-ever war games in the That Desert, is being conducted against the backdrop of studies on transformation of the Army.

●Naval station commissioned in Lakshadweep
As part of its efforts to augment the security of the strategically significant Lakshadweep archipelago, the Navy commissioned a full –scale naval base, INS Dweeprakshak, at Kavaratti on April 30, 2012.

● Tejas LCA Navy NP1 makes its maiden flight
The indigenously built Light Combat Aircraft Tejas LCA Navy NPI on April 27, 2012 made its maiden flight of 22 minutes in Bangalore, With this India has crossed a major milestone in Design, Development , Manufacturing and Testing of a “four plus” generation Carrier Borne Fly-by-Wire STOBAR aircraft. LCA Navy is the second STOBAR (Ski Take Off But Arrested Recovery) Carrier Borne aircraft in the world, after the Russian deck based aircraft.

● Navy inducts stealth frigate INS Teg
The Indian Navy on April 27, 2012 added more teeth to its war fighting capabilities with the induction of guided missile stealth frigate INS Teg to its inventory. An advanced version of the Talwar- class frigates which are already in service with it, Teg was commissioned by Vice-Admiral K.N. Sushil, Flag Officer Commanding –in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command; at a ceremony at the Yantar Shipyard at Kaliningrad Russia.

● Coast Guard Station Commissioned at Androth
A new Coast Guard Station was commissioned on April 12, 2012 at Androth Island in Lakshadweep. The station named Indian Coast Guard Station (ICGS) Androth was commissioned by Vice Admiral KN Sushil, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief Southern Naval Command.
The Force already operates two stations in the Lakshadweep Island –at Kavaratti where District Headquarters No 12 has been established and at Minicoy; both of which were commissioned by Shri AK Antony, Defence Minister in December 2010.

●UAV squadron commissioned
The maritime reconnaissance capability of the Eastern Naval Command got a fillip with the commissioning of a new Naval Air Squadron at INS Parundu, the Naval Air Station at Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu. The Naval Air Squadron INAS-344 was commissioned on April 11, 2012 by Vice Admiral Anil Chopra Officer Commanding –in –Chief, Eastern Naval Command at a ceremony at INS Parundu.
INAS -344 , known as the ‘Spirited Shadower’, is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Squadron. It is third of its kind in the Indian Navy and first on the Eastern Coast of India. The Squadron will be operating the Heron and the Searcher MK II vehicles.

● CRPF launches world’s 1st women paramilitary band
The world’s first all-women paramilitary pipe band marched to its maiden tune after it got its ceremonial colours under the CRPF in New Delhi on April 9, 2012. Minister of State for Home Jitendra Singh presented the ceremonial ‘pipe mace’ to the band commander, called ‘
Major of Pipes’, Sub-inspector Darshana kumara during the ‘Valour Day’ celebrations of the CRPF.
The CRPF is also credited to have raised the first women battalion in central police forces way back in 1986. The 2.5 lakh personnel-strong force presently has three operational women battalions with headquarters in the national capital, Gandhi nagar in Gujarat and Ajmer in Rajasthan.

● INS Chakra inducted into the Navy
Nuclear –powered attack submarine INS Chakra was formally inducted into the Navy on April 4, 2012 at the Visakhapatnam naval shipyard in the presence of chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Nirmal Verma and Flag Officer Commanding –in –Chief . Indian Navy entered the era of nuclear propulsion in 1998 with the induction of the erstwhile Chakra , a Charlie class SSGN-wherein SS denotes “Submarine”, G denotes “Guided Missile” and N denotes “Nuclear”.
The three –year lease of the erstwhile Chakra was a land mark event in international cooperation. The successful operation of this SSGN cleared the decks for the induction of present INS Chakra in its new ‘avatar’ into the Indian Navy.

● India, Lanka, Maldives conduct joint naval exercises
With international piracy extending its tentacles to Indian Ocean, Coast Guards of India, Sri Lanka and Maldives conducted a joint exercise off the coast of Male in April 2012. Six warships are taking part in the five-day exercises code named ‘Dosti XI’. Indian Coast Guard ships ‘Sankalp’ and ‘Subhadra’ Participated in the war games.

● Dahanu Coast Guard station commissioned
Vice Admiral, M.P muralidharan, Indian Coastal Guard commissioned the Dahanu Coast Guard establishment, fourth in Maharashtra , on March 22, 2012 . The station will be assigned the responsibility of coordinating various maritime operations like surveillance, search and rescue , pollution response and coastal security among others nefarious activities .
Whilst the station would be a hub in the coastal security network, it will also play an important role of intelligence- gathering and sharing with other stake holders. The station will also have experienced and highly professional rapid action team to thwart maritime security challenges.

● Torpedo, Akash handed over to Navy, IAF
The indigenously developed advanced light –weight torpedo and the Akash missile system were handed over to the Navy and the Indian Air Force in Hyderabad on March 3, 2012 in presence of Defence Minister A.K Antony.
Torpedoes are under water missiles which are fired from ships, submarines or helicopters against ships and submarines. The TAL is about 2.75 meters long, weights 220 kg and packs 50kg of explosives. It is an anti –submarine torpedo and can travel upto a maximum distance of seven km before taking out an enemy submarine. It can be launched form ships, helicopters and aircraft.
Akash and anti-aircraft defence system, can simultaneously engage several targets. It has a warhead weighing 60kg and a maximum interception range of 25km. Rajendra, the radar developed by the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), a DRDO laboratory situated at Bangalore, forms a part of the Akash system. Rajendra does the surveillance, tracks the target, acquires it and guides the missile towards it.

● India, Indonesia conduct Exercise ‘Garuda Shakti’
The Armies of India and Indonesia concluded a week-long joint military exercise on March 1, 2012. The operational part of the first-ever platoon –level joint training exercise, Exercise ‘Gardua Shakti’, was conducted at the Indian Army’s elite ‘Counter Insurgency and jungle Warfare school’ (CIJWS), Vairengte in Mizoram.

● IAF conducts exercise ‘Pralay ‘in North East
The IAF’s Eastern Air Command commenced Exercise codenamed “Pralay’ on February 29, 2012 in the Brahmaputra and rest of the Eastern region of India. The exercise involves joint Army operations by the IAF’s Eastern Air Command and Eastern Command of the Indian Army.
This is an annual exercise aimed at testing the combat potential of the Air Force in various roles such as Air Defence, Ground Support Operations, Counter Air Operations, Electronic Warfare, Joint Operations with the Army, including special operations by day and night SU-30, Mirage-2000, MiG-29, Jaguar, Bison, Mi-17, AN-32, C-130J, AWACS, Flight Refueling aircraft as well as remotely piloted aircraft from the Army are taking part in the exercise.
